TWR 103: Getting to the Root of Emotional Eating

Today Amber discusses something that plagues so many women over 40, and that is emotional eating. She breaks down the two most common reasons why women have a hard time staying consistent with their nutrition. The first is that you may have a problem with falling off the wagon time and time again. You can’t stay consistent when you get so caught up in staying perfect and adhering to unrealistic rules. This sets you up for failure because diets were never meant for the long term! The second is fixating on nutrition and fitness. This doesn’t mean forgetting those things, but doing nothing to change habits, emotions, changing limiting beliefs, etc., won’t help you to maintain who you want to become. When there’s no foundation to maintain the goals you’ve reached, and life gets in the way, you fall right back off the wagon again.

Amber focuses on emotional eating and what it looks like and the reasons behind it. Foods can be comforting and can be associated with fond memories. She goes on to explain that there are different levels of emotional eating and some can be ok at times while others can have a major negative impact on the body. More important than the frequency or the amount of eating, ask yourself what the intention is behind the emotional eating?

Amber shares her tips to begin implementing change into your eating habits and get in the right direction. Look at the origin story. Where did this come from? Can I understand it enough to forgive myself? Being aware and forgiving yourself for your mistakes is crucial to progress. Second, discern whether you are emotionally eating or if you are actually hungry. Before reaching for an unhealthy snack, take the “hunger” out of it and eat a healthy snack so you can evaluate your emotions. Lastly, use simple coping mechanisms such as breathing, meditation, friends to call or talk to, playlists of songs that pump you up, etc. Tune in for more on these tips on how to take control of your eating habits!
