Alcohol and Weight Loss. The Truth.

July 18, 2022

I recently made a Tiktok about a study I found that had over two decades of research for how much alcohol you can drink to live longer. The answer, very little.

Why? Well because alcohol has a lot of negative effects on the body.

And let's be honest, we all know this and we still drink it. Believe me, I'm not here to tell you to give up alcohol completely - I love some summertime Rosé as much as the next gal - but I want to give you some info for why switching to mocktails sometimes might be a good idea AND how it may be holding back your weight loss.

So let's break this down...

1. There is ZERO nutritional value in alcohol. Most alcohols are high in sugar content, and as we know, sugar translates to extra calories that are stored as fat. The term "beer belly" didn't come from nowhere, the extra fat that stores in your belly can be from excess high sugar alcohol if you drink often.

2. Alcohol can lead to decisions that don't move the weight loss needle. When you've had a few, it can be easy not make mindful eating decisions and before you know it you've eaten a whole plate of loaded cheese fries that you may regret in the morning.

3. Alcohol can disrupt your blood pressure, cholesterol, and hormones causing much more than just a hangover.

4. Alcohol disrupts sleep. If you know me you know sleep is on the top of the list of ways to lose weight. Even a nightcap can disrupt your sleep patterns causing longer bouts of wakefulness and this alone can cause your hunger hormones, mental health, focus and more to go completely out of whack.

BUT, I understand that for many of us, sipping a cocktail is as much about the social aspect as the anything which is why we're seeing a big trend of non alcoholic beverage companies. Just look for low sugar and clean ingredients when trying them out.

You can also get creative and try making your own! The HUGE benefit is that you can make them to taste exactly how you want using some of your favorite flavors and there's tons of recipes that use super foods like ginger and kombucha!

I go into way more detail about this topic in my podcast. Make sure to tag me if you try any new mocktails or alcohol free drinks!

And remember mamma - it's all about balance and moderation.  Just some food for thought 😘
